Ghost Month or The Hungry Ghost Festival is celebrated on the seventh month of the lunar calendar. It is believed that during this month, souls can temporarily leave the afterlife and roam around the Earth. On the 15th day of Ghost month, spirits are said to be stronger and unfortunate events are most likely to happen.
A wandering ghost is already a scary thought in itself, what more a month-long period of supposed curses and misfortunes? Well, worry not because according to experts of this tradition, there are ways to counter the bad luck of this tradition.
Avoid wearing red
Do you think red is your lucky color? Well, not during the ghost month. It is believed that wearing red makes a person more attractive to ghosts which means he or she has higher chances of getting possessed by wandering souls.
Never plan a trip and decline hang out invites
Ghost month isn’t the perfect time to go out on a vacation. When you go out on a trip you might encounter rough roads and extreme activities. During this time of the month, accidents are most likely to happen. Make use of this time to be in the comfort of your own home.
Do not stay out late at night
It might be a social struggle to postpone night out gimmicks with friends. But don’t worry, it’s until the end of the month. Going out at night during the period of Ghost Month is more likely to attract Yin energy. Remember that it is the favorite time of the ghosts to wander and spook the living.
Do not plan momentous events
Never set a wedding date on a ghost month. Signing a contract for a new business venture is also not a good idea. Butterflies in your stomach might be raging by this time and you might be overly excited to be tied up to the love of your life or start your entrepreneurial journey but hold up because the last thing you want to happen is to acquire bad luck for years.
Ghost month is indeed a superstitious celebration. The list of do’s and don’ts are endless. These beliefs are what makes a culture interesting and beautiful but never forget that you are the masters of your lives and your luck are in your hands.
