Here’s how to make your Holy Week more meaningful even if you’re not religious

For the faithful, Holy Week means reflecting on the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ by doing practices like the Visita Iglesia, participating in the salubong, or fasting from food. But for the non-believers, how can you make this week more meaningful?

To help you answer this question, here are some alternative ways to making the most out of Holy Week, even when you’re not religious.

Give up social media

Going on a weeklong social media detoxification may be an easy thing to say, but it’s an extremely difficult task to accomplish—especially when checking your phone for updates has become a daily routine. That is why the Holy Week is the perfect time to stay away from the negativity of the online world and to take this as an opportunity to actually have a real conversation with your family and friends.

Discover a greater connection with yourself

Self-reflection gives you a chance to pause, gain clarity in the middle of chaos, and create a positive mindset. During Holy Week, make a deeper connection to yourself by taking a moment to reflect on the past and assess how you responded to each situation.

Learn to appreciate the little things

We all have our own “panata” (vow) during Holy Week, right? If you are going to the beach or planning a hike, then make this experience a memorable one by being a responsible tourist and leaving a positive impact on the community.  Always remember this: Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time.

Reignite your passion for life

Maybe you have been feeling unenthusiastic lately? Or there were things you used to do but eventually lost passion for? Whether it’s reading books or creating something with your hands, this weeklong break is probably the best time to reconnect with your passion.

Regardless of personal beliefs, people should learn how to embrace silence, appreciate all the beautiful things around them, and see life from a different perspective—not just today, but every day.
