As most of us already know, March is dedicated to celebrating women around the world. It is through this month-long event called “Women’s Month” that we are able to recognize the remarkable efforts of women – from their fields of expertise to their accomplishments in their own homes and communities. And throughout history, women have made exceptional contributions that have shaped the culture and lifestyle of the current generations.
Cleopatra, for instance, fought to defend Egypt from the Roman Empire. The Philippines also has its fair share of great women. Take for example our country’s flag, which was sewn by Marcela Marino de Agoncillo, Lorenza Agoncillo, and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad – all of whom were ladies.
This Women’s Month, we’re going to take a look at some of the most important accomplishments of women and why we should be proud to be celebrating them this month:
On social and cultural achievements
By being good journalists and powerful writers, women were able to influence all social aspects of culture. Back then, women were denied in the newsrooms because of the claims that they would only deliver news with “a woman’s touch”. But Barbara Walters changed this perspective and became the first female anchor to prove that women can perfectly perform the journalism field.
This major career shift helped pave the way for women to establish better representation in the television industry. On top of that, it became an avenue for ladies to speak their minds, create art, and take a stand against sexual harassment and assault issues.
This clearly shows that society can embrace the changes in cultural settings – all the while honoring the talents and ambitions of the female population.
On political achievements
Since then, a lot of women never cease to fight gender equality. But still, many were confused about the true concept of feminism. In 1903, the all-female militant organization Suffragettes fought for women’s right to vote through peaceful and radical protests. With this, the political paradigm shifted and women were finally able to showcase their talents and capacity in leadership.
On economic achievements
The betterment of an economy depends on various aspects. But a large part of the economic structure involves women, especially in the handicrafts and weaving industry, agricultural production, and the financial and commercial sector. Despite the misogynistic remarks and acts made in the past, the organized demonstrations and rallies raised awareness on this issue and let women have equal opportunities in education and economics.
Hence, when people are productive, the country will grow. When everybody, including women, is equipped with the right education and the proper skills, the entire society can create efficient, skilled, and productive workers – which, in turn, can significantly increase economy.
Celebrating women’s month is about being grateful to the women who have inspired and empowered you because there’s nothing stronger when everyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, will work together. /FM
