The Louvre heist, seven minutes on the clock and the internet thinks robbing jewels had never been so chic

Precious jewelries were stolen from one of the world’s most famous museums, and the internet was quick to create playlists, costumes, and fan fiction.

On October 19, thieves disguised as construction workers stole eight pieces of French Crown Jewels worth €88 million from the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. The heist took just seven minutes and happened in broad daylight. No one was harmed in the process.

Since then, the incident had taken the internet by storm. Many are shocked that such heists still happen in modern times.

Others are jokingly blaming fictional masterminds like Carmen Sandiego, Catwoman, and the Ocean’s crew, and other similar characters.

Additionally, people began to treat it as an aesthetic or vibe. Users created themed playlists featuring songs like ‘The Louvre’ by Lorde, ‘Paris’ by The Chainsmokers, ‘Robbers’ by The 1975, and ‘Getaway Car’ by Taylor Swift, among others.

With Halloween just around the corner, people began dressing up as the Louvre thieves—wearing black clothing, gloves, a construction vest, jewelry, and crowns.

Some would even go so far as to create their own characters and write stories about how the robbery might have unfolded.

Robberies felt straight out of an ‘Ocean’s Eight’ movie. To think that someone carefully planned an art robbery executed in a swift manner, people’s reactions would surely be one of awe or wonder.

Overall, the reaction of the internet had been less serious than expected because no one was harmed.

They have started to fantasize a thrilling night at the Louvre in the city of love as a band of misfits, going on a car chase, and blasting songs to add to the feeling.

The celebratory dinner must have been so fun, right?

It was audacious, tasteful, and chic, and it would have been a fun experience. You just had to respect their game. It was far from the bloody crime we see on the news, that’s why it was romanticized.

The public’s fascination glossed over the seriousness of the crime, despite it being a major security breach and the danger posed by using chainsaws in public.

It’s ironic that the coverage and attention that most media outlets and the internet has given to the Louvre heist is not on par or diverted focus form far more pressing issues, such as war and corruption in various parts of the globe.

On October 26, two of the suspects for the heist were apprehended, the others are still at large.
