Reddit users discover original Filipino recipes dating back from the 1900s

There’s nothing better than a home-cooked meal, especially when it’s made with the rich flavors of our ancestral recipes.

In an Instagram story posted yesterday, famous personality Erwan Heussaff shared a glimpse of Filipino recipes that seemed to catch the interest of other chefs and food critics.

Erwan's story

Food enthusiast John Sherwin took to his Facebook page and shared that the Featr founder sent him a Google Drive link containing a compilation of over 70 Philippine cookbooks dating as far back as 1908. Heussaff apparently found the recipes on Reddit, originally posted by a user named “Chill_Boi.”

The user provided screenshots of the Reddit thread together with an overview of Google Drive, and expressed in his post, “I want to share these with everyone because I believe we should democratize knowledge— the same belief held by the author.” He also went on to thank Erwan and “the kind Redditor who shared these to the public!”

Other users who stumbled upon Sherwin’s post agreed that Filipinos should indeed explore more local dishes, and noted that there are more recipes that can be found in the National Library of the Philippines. Others thanked the two personalities for publicizing these books, naming these recipes and guides a “treasure.”

The Google Drive contains Domestic Science books that teach its readers practical instructions on housekeeping, cooking, and specifying how condiments can be used to enhance particular flavors in different dishes. Authors have been identified to be educators and directors of health from back in 1918, suggesting the proper balances that should be applied in daily meals.

Other books also fulfilled objectives on home economics for young learners, giving them basic recipes to master and household chores to practice on a daily basis. One thing these books had in common, however, was a similar belief that Sherwin noted in his post, being the familiarization of Filipinos with Philippine dishes from their local produce, noting that this is a means of uplifting our identity and roots.

The books are accessible for viewing access and have a copy link feature for readers who want to share these recipes with their friends and families.
