This is not the typical “puppy love” that your parents said won’t last long and is just for kids. This is a love story of a woman who found her lifelong “buddy” in the most unexpected place and time in her life.
Emmy Karnót was a German tourist who initially planned for a six-week vacation in the Philippines, but ended up staying for three months after meeting Buddy in Boracay, taking home more than just a souvenir from her trip.
Buddy was a stray “aspin” (asong Pinoy) who lived in an old police car when Emmy met him. When a policeman introduced Buddy to Emmy on her birthday, it was love at paws sight.
Buddy was given to Emmy as a birthday gift. She decided to take him back to Germany. Despite the whole process being “complicated and expensive,” Emmy couldn’t leave Buddy behind.
Buddy now lives in Germany, having traded the white, sandy beaches of Boracay for the fields, lakes, and snow of his adopted country.

He now has a home, friends, and a good life with a mom who truly loves him.
Surely, Buddy wasn’t the kind of gift Emmy was expecting to get on her vacation here in the country. According to the Daily Mail, Emmy said she’s never had a dog before, so she didn’t know how to raise one. But now they’re living a happy life, and Emmy is doing a great job being Buddy’s mom.
After adopting Buddy, Emmy actively promotes pet adoption and encourages people to: “Adopt. Don’t shop.”

When you shop for a pet, you deprive another well-deserving animal of a home, family, and love. The sad reality is that animals staying at pounds and shelter homes have an uncertain future.
Caretakers and volunteers will provide for them, but only to the extent of what their funds allow. In most shelters, animals that aren’t adopted after a certain time are put to sleep. Stray dogs who aren’t as lucky as Buddy barely survive on the street.
So adopt if you can, feed them if you can, and help them have a home and the love they deserve. Adopting and giving a homeless animal a home will be worth it.
Just take it from Emmy. Who knows, that “buddy” of yours might be your happily ever after too.
