On the 10th of April in New York City, Actress Mariska Hargitay was on the set for Law & Order: SVU in which she plays Olivia Benson. She was in the middle of filming the final episode for their 25th season; which was scheduled to air at 9:00 p.m. ET, May 16th on NBC.
The 60-year-old actress in costume was mistaken for a real-life police officer when a little girl suddenly approached Mariska and asked for assistance in locating her mother.
According to People, a witness noticed the little girl had separated from her mother in the Anne Loftus Playground while they were both visiting Fort Tryon Park in Manhattan. Fortunately, the child was able to spot Hargitay in her “badge” and approached her for help.
Mariska Hargitay’s profound bond with her character of over 25 years, anchoring her to the role of empathy and courage. When the child stumbled onto the set in search of her mother, Hargitay didn’t hesitate to pause production for over 20 minutes until the two were reunited. The little girl, oblivious to the bustling film crew and Hargitay’s esteemed co-actor Ice T, found solace in the arms of the actress.
Reflecting on the touching moment, Hargitay shared, “We’ve been on a parallel journey,” She continued, “There’s a thing: WWOBD, ‘What would Olivia Benson do?’” This simple yet profound question underscores the impact of her character’s dedication to justice and compassion. Through this, it’s understandable how Mariska won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2006 and a Golden Globe in the category for Best Actress in a Television Drama Series in 2005 for Olivia Benson. Benson really is a part of her and her life.
The adoption of altruism through her character not only expressed a heartwarming moment but also underscored honor as a woman who has experienced the hearty ups and downs of showbiz for nearly four decades. “If there’s a crisis, I just take over and lead like that. Being strong and fearless. It’s sort of this perfect feminist story,” she shared.
