Clip of former ’90 Day Fiancé’ participant resurfaces and goes viral for fat-shaming comments

This wasn’t the first time the clip made people uncomfortable.

A clip from Season 10 of the TLC reality show “90 Day Fiancé” recently resurfaced on social media and drew flak after it showed a Korean participant making inconsiderate comments to his American fiancée.

The couple in the clip were Seungdo Ham (Nick) and Devin Hoofman, who were 31 and 23 on the show respectively at the time. Nick and Devin met on the dating app Tinder, and were together for 2 years before Devin decided to move back to the United States due to homesickness.

After realizing that they could not do a long-distance relationship setup, the couple got engaged and filed for a K-1 visa (the whole idea of the ’90 Day Fiancé’ thing). Prior to the events in the clip, the show explored a little bit on the dynamics of Nick and Devin’s relationship, particularly on the mild fat-shaming tendencies that Nick has.

During his introduction, Nick revealed that he calls Devin “Piggy” as a term of endearment and because he thought she was cute and “a little chubby”. In response, Devin did say to the cameras that “chubby” meant something different in America, and that it was highly offensive for someone to call someone as “chubby”.

Fast forward to the clip, Nick and Devin were sitting down and having a meal with Devin’s family friends when one of them asked Nick on how Koreans perceive Americans.

Nick apparently replied, “Greasy food and being fat,” which warranted a kind of shocked reaction from the friend, but Nick bounced back by saying that this wasn’t his personal opinion, but just how Koreans usually see Americans.

Devin did try rationalizing the whole situation, saying that “unhealthy food is cheaper than healthy food. But Nick made the whole conversation even more awkward than it already was by turning to Devin and saying, “No wonder you are piggy,” while touching her stomach.

Also note: This episode was a year ago, and it still makes people incredibly uncomfortable.

Yet, there were also others who defended Nick by saying that it was “just the way his culture thinks.” Which doesn’t validate anything he says, by the way. And maybe, just maybe, it’s one of the reasons for the 4B movement in South Korea.

After the clip went viral last year, Nick took to his Instagram to defend himself.

Oh and another thing, Nick and Devin got married last December 2023. So yeah, hope he got a little better in that aspect.
