Ed Sheeran makes a ‘perfect’ comeback in Manila with ‘Mathematics Tour’

Following his last visit during the ‘Divide Tour’ in 2018, the beloved British songwriter Ed Sheeran made his long-awaited comeback to the Philippines on March 9, 2024, with the ‘Mathematics Tour’ at the SMDC Festival Grounds in Parañaque City. With a slew of hit songs and an even more mesmerizing performance, Sheeran made the 100th show of his tour memorable

The night kicked off with sensational performances from singer Calum Scott and OPM band Ben&Ben. Scott serenaded the audience with his popular tracks “You Are The Reason” and “Dancing On My Own,” while Ben&Ben captivated the crowd with their soulful songs, including “Pagtingin” and “Kathang Isip.” Later that night, Sheeran also invited Ben&Ben’s vocalists Paolo and Miguel Benjamin on stage to perform their hit song “Maybe the Night,” creating a surreal moment not only for fans but also for the Filipino musicians themselves.

Sheeran, visibly thrilled to be back in Manila, expressed his appreciation for the city’s passionate fans, stating, “I was here about 6 years ago; Manila has been the loudest crowd.”

Wearing a customized “Mathematics” tour shirt with “Manila” text on the front, the hitmaker ignited the crowd’s energy from the get-go with his opening song “Tides.” From there, he seamlessly transitioned into crowd favorites like “Don’t,” “No Diggity,” and “Give Me Love,” captivating audiences from all corners of the SMDC Festival Grounds.

Throughout the night, Sheeran showcased his versatility as an artist, from the upbeat rhythms of “Galway Girl,” accompanied by violinist Alicia Enstrom, to the soulful melody of “Thinking Out Loud.”

Encouraging audience participation, Sheeran quipped, “These are songs even your grandmother knows. If you don’t know the lyrics, you’re probably in the wrong concert,” then went on to sing the OG Sheerios’ favorite tracks such as “Photograph,” “Tenerife Sea,” “Sing,” and “Happier.” He also treated fans to a beautiful rendition of “Love Yourself.”

As the night drew to a close, Sheeran reassured his Filipino fans that he wouldn’t wait another six years to return, promising, “I promise I will be back but not 6 or 7 years long.”

To close the concert, Sheeran left the audience in awe with performances of “Shape of You” and “Bad Habits,” accompanied by a dazzling display of fireworks that illuminated the Manila sky.

For the fans who attended the Mathematics Tour in Manila, it was indeed a night to remember, reaffirming Ed Sheeran’s status as one of the most captivating performers of our time.
