‘The grand exit’: Understanding the rise and impact of ‘loud quitting’ in the workplace

Not only can one have a grand entrance as a newbie in a workplace, but one can also do a grand exit in the form of “loud quitting.”

You probably have already heard of “quiet quitting,” which refers to employees refraining from going above and beyond with their jobs as they prioritize boundaries between work and personal life. They usually just follow established protocols and provide proper notice to quit work. It is also often referred to as a rejection of the hustle culture in today’s time. However, other employees choose the other way around.

“Loud quitting” is a growing trend in 2023 wherein employees disengage from their jobs actively and openly display their lack of commitment. This insight comes from a report in Fortune Magazine, which references Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2023 Report.

Some employees take a risk with loud quitting. They opt to go for actions that can directly harm the company they are in, often to reveal workplace issues and injustices. As a result, this creates a dramatic exit that grabs attention and brings lasting impressions both on the employee and the company.

It is no surprise that every company has its issues and toxicities. But how “loud quitting” is now becoming a thing can be rooted in the power of social media. In fact, CBS shared that there is even a TikTok trend under the “#Quittok,” that has been making waves with people broadcasting their resignations, particularly through TikTok. The liberty that social media provides us pushes us to be more vocal about our experiences. Anything controversial can quickly go viral and while some backlash is expected, the wave of support the employee gets is something that could bring them comfort especially when coming from a stressful and toxic environment in a company. Regardless of how much noise this can create, one can only assume that these individuals only hope to bring change and at least bring awareness to their concerns which can also be experienced by others.

But then again, this comes at a high cost.

Considering the perspective of the company, such circumstances can tarnish its name. This could potentially affect the flow of work within the company as other employees may choose to leave as well. On the other hand, individuals can also risk their professional lives. Such actions may be viewed as unprofessional and impulsive. Then on, future employers may be hesitant to hire them as they may already be perceived as someone disruptive and difficult to work with.

Although, “loud quitting,” may have, at some point, brought meaningful changes and improvements in several workplace cultures and management practices, it is also crucial to consider several factors. Forbes emphasizes thinking about the consequences of it before making the move. At the end of it all, it is always better to reach out to the people you work with first and discuss the issues and concerns you are having with them. Only take higher actions like, “loud quitting,” when you have already exhausted all the proper and conventional ways you can deal with the issue. As if you look at the bigger picture, “loud quitting,” can only bring people additional and unnecessary stress.

Companies can easily get back on their feet no matter what controversies they may face. So, whatever you may decide to do, ask yourself, can you do the same?
