Filipina fashion designer dresses Gucci’s great-granddaughter for Cannes Film Festival

“It’s like a turning point for my career professionally and also for me personally. I am still dreaming. It is really happening that they are recognizing Filipino talent here.”

Milan-based Filipino fashion designer, Chona Bacaoco, dressed various celebrities for the 76th Cannes Film Festival, one of which is Drusilla Gucci, model and great-granddaughter of the founder of the iconic fashion brand, Gucci.

In an interview with DZMM’s TeleRadyo, Bacaoco shared how she came to dress Gucci for the event, “I submitted my design and I didn’t hear back for some time so I thought maybe she didn’t pick me. So I said I will just try again next time. And then five days before the Cannes Film Festival, they called me. ‘Chona, Drusilla picked you to be her designer for her red carpet exposure,’” she said.

She also expressed her worries and excitement toward the event, saying, “I couldn’t believe that someone like me [would dress someone like her]. I still have a lot of things to learn in this industry. But dressing someone so iconic – her mom is a fashion critic – that actually scares me more than dressing the great-granddaughter of Gucci.”

Bacaoco shared how it was an honor for her to dress various celebrities for her first-ever Cannes Film Festival, including Morroco-born influencer Mila Suarez and Italian artist Selvaggia Roma.

The Ilongga designer was born in Iloilo City and was raised in Guimaras by a dressmaker mother. Her career started with a modeling agency in Milan on 2016, and officially launched her brand, MM Milano, three years later in 2019.

“I said I can’t just launch my brand here in Milan knowing it’s the world’s fashion capital. There will be a lot of challenges along the way but kung may tiyaga ka at lakas ng loob, [makakaya mo],” she said on opening her own brand.

Bacaoco recently produced a fashion show for Michael Cinco’s first-ever fashion week in Milan last February.
