After the success of The Last of Us premier this year, fans’ anticipation towards what’ll happen next might have to drag a little longer as the second season of the series is slated to be released in 2025.
HBO’s Head of Drama, Francesca Orsi, said in an interview with Deadline, that they’re “looking at the [release of] The Last Of Us for some time in 2025” but “there’s some question about [the] timing of the strike,” she added.
HBO is among the other studios that are affected by the ongoing Writers’ Guild of America (WGA) strike for higher salary wages and fair treatment – putting the writing for The Last of Us and other HBO shows on a halt.
“While everything at this moment is pencils down, I’m hopeful that we can come to terms sooner than later,” Orsi said.
Other HBO series including House of the Dragon and The White Lotus are slated to be released in 2024, and Euphoria in 2025, but will still differ depending on how long the strike last.
She said, “At this point, those shows that I’m looking to air wouldn’t necessarily be ready if this strike lasts six to nine months. So yes, that’s a big question for us, but I think we’ll cross that road once we come to it.”
For now, the showrunner and director of The Last of Us, Neil Druckman, shared that the video-game-based post-apocalyptic drama will have “more infected” just like the people wanted.
“The success of the first season absolutely affords us [a] bigger budget, more time. So, we can consider the scripts, consider the people we’re bringing to be part of our team, [and] consider the pre-production. I am very, very excited for the stuff we have planned for the second season that, especially for people that wanted more infected, well, just get ready,” Druckman said.
