YouTuber Hank Green shares that he is battling cancer

In a video released on Friday morning, Hank Green, a popular content creator who rose to fame through a collaborative channel with his brother dubbed as ‘Vlogbrothers’, ‘Crash Course,’ and ‘SciShow’ channels on YouTube, revealed that he was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma after noticing enlarged lymph nodes.

The 43-year-old influencer mentioned that blood cancer can be treated, and he already started his first chemotherapy session soon after the video was uploaded on YouTube.

“Good news is, it’s something called Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It’s the most treatable — like one of the most treatable cancers. It responds very well to treatment. The goal is cure,” he said.

“It seems likely that we caught mine early. I’m still waiting on a scan to sort of confirm that,” he added.

Green also mentioned that he had a bunch of risk factors for lymphoma, including treatment and medications that he has taken, along with the risks of his autoimmune disease and mono when he was a child.

He also received comments from his friends who had been through various cancers, and one of the things they all said was that ‘this is his job now.’

“Do this one day at a time. Don’t have obligations. You can have the things you can do if you want to that day, and it’s good to have those things because depression and anxiety are a big part of this and I’m not a person who has struggled a lot with that but I have seen first hand now how intricately linked those things can be,” he explained.

Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of unusual blood cancer that forms in the lymphatic system. It is caused by a mutation in the DNA of a white blood cell known as ‘B lymphocytes’. Although it’s an aggressive disease and can spread easily through different parts of the body, it’s one of the most treatable types of cancer, and a person who’s diagnosed with this disease can have a treatment plan depending on their age and general health status.

Meanwhile, William Henry Green II, commonly known by his moniker, Hank Green, started his very busy career as a content creator, along with his brother, John Green, way back in 2007. He gained prominence through his notable works as a science communicator and for helping and building a network of online communities who are interested in scientific knowledge.

In 2021, Hank was featured in POP! for rebranding himself as Gen Z’s dad — advising youths on TikTok not to eat the forbidden Earth salad (grass) and educating them on modern scientific concepts.

Get well soon, Dad!
