Grimes offers 50% royalties to deep fake her voice for AI-generated music

It turns out that David Guetta is right when he said that ‘the future of music is in AI.’ With a growing number of musicians resorting to deep fake vocals, Artificial intelligence is indeed at its peak in the music realm. Recently, an AI-generated smash, ‘Heart on My Sleeve’ has gained traction online with deep fakes of artists, The Weeknd and Drake. Joining the trend, Pop songstress Grimes has invited her supporters to deep fake her vocals and offer them a split of 50% royalties.

On April 23, Grimes announced on Twitter that she was open to deep faking her voice and creating music out of it.

“I’ll split 50% royalties on any successful AI generated song that uses my voice. Same deal as I would with any artist I collab with. Feel free to use my voice without penalty. I have no label and no legal bindings,” the lo-fi R&B singer tweeted, expressing her interest in becoming a ‘guinea pig’ or a subject for musical experiments.

“I’m just curious what even happens and interested in being a Guinea pig,” she added as she welcomes the open-sourcing of art.

Grimes

Based on reports, Grimes has long adopted AI as a techno artist. Her 2020 album, ‘Miss Anthropocene,’ was her first-ever single to top the Billboard dance charts. The music tells about the technological effects on Earth’s ecology in the post-Industrial Revolution period. In the same year, she collaborated with Endel, an algorithmic mood music startup, to produce an AI-made lullaby for her first child with SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Grimes expressed her appreciation to the overlords of Ableton for cleaning her tracks; however, she warned the public that AI might outpace and make musicians obsolete.

Despite the possible threats, Grimes will push through with it. On April 24, Meyers confirmed that the singer’s voice is now available to chat with and they are currently looking into ‘supporting singing.’

As the surge of deep fakes continues to dominate the industry, is there still a bright future for the new breed of musicians? Let’s see.
