Kim Heechul of Super Junior was recently embroiled in a controversy after his participation in a live broadcast last February 9, 2023.
The Super Junior member joined BJ (broadcasting jockey) Choi’s live broadcast on AfreecaTV, whilst enjoying alcoholic drinks. In the broadcast, the SuJu member defended his former group member Kangin, who was involved in a DUI case in 2009 and an assault case in 2017. Heechul also swore on live broadcast while they were discussing school violence and a specific online community, which viewers did not take kindly to.
Heechul took to his Instagram on February 13, 2023, to apologize for his remarks.
“Regardless of the right or wrong of my thoughts, I apologize for exaggeratively using profanity and vulgar expressions and for portraying double standards.
I am most sorry to the fans who were hurt by the controversy I made once again. This will be the last time this happens, and I will try my best not to be involved in any controversy in the future.
However, no matter how much I reflect [on my remarks], I don’t think it’s wrong to swear at school violence [perpetrators] and certain sites.
Thank you.”
The entire community had mixed feelings towards the issue, while some applauded the idol-host for apologizing and still sticking up for his own beliefs, some were still on the fence over it and were against what he did and said.
personally, there is no doubt on whether the apology is sincere or not because, as you can tell from the last line of his post, kim heechul isn't one to apologize for things he doesn't truly regret. the issue is closed for me, now back to normality. rest.https://t.co/YNGlmtTPQw

1. Context of this "women generation" community. It's a very well known online community with only women (obvi) but they are also known for most members being vocal about feminism (can sometimes come off very strong/radical about it). pic.twitter.com/u1hSEBhWvh

So far this is what I found, women's generation is the organisation whose members are responsible for leaving malicious comments after heechul said "Both men and women are responsible for the deaths that happened in kpop industry due to malicious comments".

now nothing. the damage is done. because even after knowing the context, and where his resentment coming from, heechul was still reckless and irresponsible for going off like that on someone else's show while being drunk, spewing harsh and vulgar words. he deserves to be- https://t.co/ct0cP5klT4

heechul openly calling feminist women bitches after being self proclaimed the women protector or saying women feel comfortable around his is very sick borderline concerning

good morning to heechul proving that i was right for giving him the benefit of the doubt. i get why he makes no apologies for the reason of his anger, but he did apologize for his rude and immature behavior and that's what i wanted. just this once tho heechul, behave from now on. pic.twitter.com/ODhG0ON2uq
