Miley Cyrus’s low-key diss track ‘Flowers’ is the newest anthem of independent women

Miley Cyrus opened the year with a blast with the release of her new single, ‘Flowers.’

On January 13, 2023, Miley Cyrus returned to the music scene with her latest song, ‘Flowers,’ from her much-awaited album ‘Endless Summer Vacation.’ The pop singer did not disappoint, as her newest single easily gained traction over social media and got more than a hundred million streams on Spotify shortly after its release.

Aside from Miley’s powerful vocals, the release of ‘Flowers’ immediately became a pop culture moment due to its empowering lyrics—a message for women to pursue independence and love themselves more than anyone else–and its possible back story (which Cyrus has yet to confirm or deny). Critics and music journalists have touted the song as the singer’s earnest reply to the message behind ‘When I Was Your Man’ by Bruno Mars, which was released in 2012. ‘When I was your man’ is a song of regret, and is about a man reminiscing old memories with his girl, whom he has taken for granted.

Judging from the lyrics, Miley Cyrus seems to answer the Bruno Mars song, which allegedly was dedicated to her by her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. Many fans have pointed out that Cyrus released her newest single exactly on the day of Hemsworth’s birthday.

The chorus of “When I was your man” goes like this:

“I hope he buys you flowers
I hope he holds your hand
Give you all his hours
When he has the chance
Take you to every party
‘Cause I remember how much you loved to dance
Do all the things I should have done
When I was your man.”

In ‘Flowers,’ Cyrus seems to respond to the song, line by line:

“I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours
Say things you don’t understand
I can take myself dancing
And I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than you can.”

Hemsworth allegedly cheated on Cyrus with lots of women during the entire course of their relationship. They got married in 2018 and announced their divorce later in 2019.

This new single is pointing out to an empowered and independent Miley Cyrus–it seems the ‘Wrecking Ball’ singer is now in her ‘best’ era, and everyone is loving it.

Cyrus’s ‘Flowers’ is now looking to be an apt anthem for women who are seeking vengeance against old partners who have hurt them. This song is about women who have survived toxic and depressing relationships with people who didn’t deserve their love and respect.

Listening to this track and watching its music video is like telling yourself that you don’t really need someone to satisfy your needs and wants, and that this is the time for you to love yourself more and do the things that make you happy without asking for anyone’s permission. This song will teach you how to be a better woman and that in order to be the best version of yourself, you have to leave people, things, and situations that no longer serve you.

Miley’s song is more and more becoming a good reminder for us to reach the best versions of ourselves by leaving behind the people who no longer help us grow.
