English musician and singer-songwriter Alexander James O’Connor, more popularly known by his stage name as Rex Orange County, has been charged with counts of sexual assault in London after a series of reported sexual assaults on a woman on six separate occasions. However, the artist, appearing in Southwark court in London, has denied the allegations. He has pleaded “not guilty” to all charges, and has been released on unconditional bail. A provisional trial date has been set for January 3, 2023.
A representative of the artist released a statement to the press, saying “Alex is shocked by the allegations which he denies and looks forward to clearing his name in court,” and that “he is unable to make any further comment because of the ongoing proceedings.”
Fans of the singer took to Twitter to express their support for the Grammy-nominated artist, despite the nature of the allegations:
In July 2022, the artist announced that he was cancelling his upcoming tours in Australia, New Zealand and Europe due to “unforeseen personal circumstances” and is set to “spend some time at home this year,” adding on that he would “not be able to continue with touring as planned”.
