‘Bridgerton’ season 3 will focus on Penelope and Colin’s love story

Bridgerton reveals its plan for the show’s season 3, and it looks like they will be skipping ahead of its original book order.

The beloved period drama Bridgerton, which premiered in 2020, immediately rose to popularity and has garnered millions of viewers across the world with its beautiful, yet heartbreaking, love story. Following its huge success, the show just recently returned with a second season last March 2022, and Bridgerton fans are about to be delighted once again, as the producers reveal the plan for the show’s upcoming season 3 release.

Bridgerton is based on a romance novel series written by Julia Quinn. While the first two seasons of the show followed the original first two novels, wherein season 1 focused on Daphne Bridgerton (played by Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Bassett’s (played by Regé-Page Jean) love story, and season 2 followed the romance between Anthony Bridgerton (played by Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (played by Simone Ashley), it has been revealed that the third season of the drama series won’t follow the book order and will instead focus on Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington’s (played by Nicola Coughlan) love story.

The news was revealed by actress Nicola Coughlan herself, during the FYSEE panel. Colin and Penelope’s love story is actually written in the fourth book of the novel series, while the third book is about the love life of Benedict Bridgerton, but it seems like that story will be saved for another season.

More than the initial plot of the story, Bridgerton fans are also faced with other changes as creator Chris Van Dusen has stepped down as showrunner, with Jess Brownell stepping in. Van Dusen said in an interview last March that Bridgerton will always have a special place in his heart, and will always be proud of how successful the show has become.

“The fact that this show has become Netflix’s biggest English language speaking series ever is something I’m incredibly proud of, and something I’ll always be incredibly proud of. But at the end of the day, you know, it was time for me to move on, and hopefully create that magic again in the near future,” Van Dusen said.

Another change that will take place in the show’s season 3 will be the casting of Francesca Bridgerton, who was originally played by Ruby Stokes. The actress has landed the lead role in another show, Lockwood & Co. Stokes will be replaced by Hannah Dodd as Francesca Bridgerton.

Bridgerton is a period drama show set in the backdrop of the Regency era, wherein the eight close siblings of the powerful and wealthy Bridgerton family navigate their way through the high society of London in a hopeful search of love and happiness surrounded by friends and even rivals.
