Manga artist Fujiko A. Fujio (real name Motoo Abiko), best known as co-creator of Doraemon, has passed away at the age of 88. Fujiko A. Fujio was at his residence in Kawasaki, Tokyo when he passed.
On Thursday morning, April 7, local police were alerted that Fujiko A. Fujio had passed out in his home. The manga artist had reportedly already passed by the time the police arrived at the scene. As of writing, the cause of Fujiko A. Fujio’s death is still unknown.
Fujiko A. Fujio was best known for working alongside his childhood best friend Fujiko F. Fujio (real name Hiroshi Fujimoto), and together the two had formed the Fujiko Fujio duo, which was later on dissolved.
As a duo, the two had created Doraemon, which went on to become one of the most popular manga series of all time, with the titular character also becoming a popular icon beloved by children all over the world. The Doraemon manga series was first released in 1970 and ran until 1996. Doraemon continued to gain popularity over the years through its numerous films and series adaptations.
Aside from Doraemon, Fujiko A. Fujio was also known for creating other hit series, such as Ninja Hattori-kun, Kaibutsu-kun, and The Laughing Salesman, all of which were also adapted into anime series.
Rest in peace, Fujiko A. Fujio. You are truly a legend who made quite the impact on Japanese culture. Your legacy will surely be remembered.
