It’s Back To The Future Day! To live through one of pop culture’s biggest dates–what a time to be alive!
By Vida Lacano
It’s October 21, 2015, and by Doc and Marty’s calculations, today IS the future. Which makes it the past. I know, so confusing. Thanks a lot, Doc and Marty.
We already know the surprising things that the movie Back to the Future got right: virtual reality, video conferencing, 3D advertising, HOVERBOARD (sure, it’s technically just a blinged-up mini Segway which is a far cry from the movie’s original idea of a skateboard that hovers, but still)…the list goes on. Robert Zemeckis sure had wild ideas, and a lot of them did become reality two decades later. However, there are still some things in the Back To The Future series that have yet to become a reality. Like:
1.) Flying cars
We are obviously streets away from this “product of the near future.” However, we have (super amazing) Tesla cars and self-driving Google and Uber vehicles. So I think we’re en route to achieving this some time soon (fingers crossed).
2.) Pepsi Perfect
To be honest, this was a nice concept–having your own Pepsi drink dispensed at your beck and call. We’re not seeing this now as a regular supermarket item, though. However, as their way to celebrate the whole Back To The Future throwback shenanigan, Pepsi announced earlier this month that they will be printing out 6,500 bottles of limited edition Pepsi Perfect. Unfortunately available for those in the US only. Womp womp.
3.) Dehydrated pizzas
The problem with the concept of “dehydrated pizza” is that pizza is supposed to be enjoyed fresh off the oven. As in, created by hand and baked to perfection. You know, like how most pizza parlors do it. And we already know from eating cup noodles to just how far dehydrated food will take you.
4.) Self-tying shoes
While it is great concept, why waste manhours developing this technology when we already have velcros? Although, props to everyone who wanted Nike to actually make the shoes that Marty McFly wore on the movie.
5.) Fax machines
According to Back To The Future 2, people will be receiving their termination slips (and possibly break up letters) through fax machines. Of course today people receive them through passive-aggressive Facebook status updates.
6.) Phone booths
We now see more out-of-home advertisements than phone booths, and that’s a fact.
Bonus: THIS FASHION
Glad this fashion statement isn’t a reality…yet.
Happy Back To The Future Day, everyone! <3
