If you haven’t already seen it, South Korea’s newest drama “Squid Game” is finally out!
“Squid Game” is a 9-episode drama starring Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo and Wi Ha-joon that sees a group of people vie for a 45.6 billion won prize in a mysterious survival game. It was released on September 17, 2021 and has since received positive reviews from critics and viewers everywhere.
While the plot of the series itself is very creative and “novel” to a lot of people, one particular character stood out in the series’ first episode. No, it’s not any one of the main characters or actors, but a cameo role.
And that’s where Gong Yoo, our beloved goblin from the popular 2016 K-Drama “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God” enters the scene.
(From this part on, spoiler warning!)
In the series’ first episode, Lee Jung-jae’s character is a man with many debts and is approached by a salesman (Gong Yoo) who challenges him to play a game of ddakji, or a paper flip game. When Lee’s character is able to win he’ll be awarded money, and if not, he’ll get slapped instead.
In the end, Lee’s character is able to win a few after a series of slaps by Gong Yoo, and is eventually invited to take part in the “Squid Game”.
(Spoiler ends here)
Gong Yoo’s cameo role in the newest Netflix South Korean series drew in a lot of views and reactions, most especially towards his hilarious slapping scenes and his outstanding visuals at the age of 42.
