Is #FreeBritney finally happening? Mr Spears files to end conservatorship

Jamie Spears, Britney’s father, reportedly petitioned last Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court to terminate his daughter’s conservatorship, which has controlled the singer’s life and finances for 13 years.

In the petition it said that Mr. Spears “wants what is best for his daughter” and that if Britney really wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can take care of her own life, her father “believes that she should get that chance.”

Is #FreeBritney finally happening? It’s possible, if Judge Brenda Penny, who is handling the case, approves Mr. Spears’ petition to end the conservatorship entirely.

Jamie Spears conservatorship

On August 12, Jamie Spears had stated in a filing that he planned to step down as conservator of his daughter’s finances, but he did not disclose when he would do so. In 2019, Mr. Spears relinquished control over his daughter’s life decisions and since then has only been handling her finances. He repeatedly claimed that he had acted only in Britney’s best interest, and that there weren’t any justified reasons for his removal as the singer’s appointed guardian.

For years, Jamie Spears has been under fire for the conservatorship issue, receiving flak from his daughter’s fans, the public, and Britney herself. The conservatorship started in 2008 when Britney started showing signs of public mental struggles as the media constantly obsessed over her life.

The 39-year-old singer has spoken against the conservatorship arrangement many times in the past, saying that it is “abusive.” She has even filed legal documents to remove her father’s role as overseer of her $60 million estate. In November 2020, a judge denied the request to remove Jamie Spears and instead appointed the financial firm Bessemer Trust as co-conservator of her estate.

On June 23, Britney mentioned in her speech that because of the conservatorship, she was being compelled to take certain medications and even use an intrauterine device for birth control against her will.

On July 26, Britney’s new attorney Rosengart filed for Jamie Spears’ removal, saying that the singer’s father had mismanaged her finances and affairs. Rosengart also suggested that Jamie Spears had used the conservatorship for his own gain.

The conservatorship was originally extended until September 2021, but with Mr. Spears’ recent petition to terminate the conservatorship, if his petition gets approved Britney might be free at last.
