Anne Hathaway reveals she never liked being called ‘Anne’

It’s Annie Hathaway now, according to the Queen of Genovia herself.

The 38-year-old actress went on ‘The Tonight Show’ to promote her new movie ‘Locked Down,’ and share some unexpected sentiments she had regarding her name. Hathaway revealed that she never liked being called Anne. “Call me anything but Anne,” she told Jimmy Fallon in the interview.

After her breakout role as Mia Thermopolis in ‘The Princess Diaries,’ Anne Hathaway has become a household name. Since then she’s gone on to win awards at the Oscars and Golden Globes. So it comes as a surprise to hear that she actually prefers to go by a different name. She shared that the only person close to her who calls her Anne is her mother, but only when she’s in trouble.

Apparently Hathaway got stuck with everyone calling her by her first name when she registered with the Screen Actors Guild. She was 14 years old at the time when she did her first commercial, and it didn’t occur to her then that people would call her Anne for the rest of her life. Now almost 21 years into her career, she has finally spoken up. “Everybody, call me Annie. Please.”

While this may be news to the public, Hathaway has been going by various nicknames on sets for quite some time. Annie also goes by Mrs. H and Hath.

Just a few days after word spread, the Madame Tussauds wax museum in Times Square, New York took note. The museum will be changing Hathaway’s name plate next to her wax figure to reflect “Annie Hathaway.”
