When we talk about Philippine history, it is common to discuss the patriotism and martyrdom of Andres Bonifacio, Apolinario Mabini, and of course, Dr. Jose Rizal, which have been well immortalized in films and books. But sometimes, it’s also worth putting a spotlight on other stories of our history. One patriotic man who also deserves great recognition is our national hero’s big brother, Paciano Rizal.
Paciano’s nationalistic contributions somewhat remain “underrated”. In case this wasn’t discussed in your grade school Sibika at Kultura–he was the major support of Jose Rizal to continue his fight for the motherland’s cause. Apart from that, there was also Paciano weathering some struggles in order to finance Pepe’s study abroad.
In view of this, this year’s Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival will feature Heneral Rizal to unveil the heroism of Paciano. Directed by Chuck Gutierrez, the 22-minute film will elucidate the meaning of “nationalism and what it really means to be a Filipino.”
Moreover, veteran actor and Tanghalang Pilipino head Nanding Josef will portray the character of Paciano Rizal.
The digital edition of the 16th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival is open from August 7 to 16, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, viewers can stream online via Vimeo.
