Research Fair 2020: Unmasking youth potential for Science and Technology

The University of the Philippines Academic League of Chemical Engineering Students, Inc. (UP ALCHEMES) concluded their 19th Research Fair last February 1, 2020 at UP Diliman, Quezon City. The Philippines’ premier three-day nationwide event for highschool students centered around the grueling science and technology research competition in the sub-event Research Competition (RC), and series of informative talks and seminars regarding trends in research in the Youth Science Convention (YSC).

The Research Competition started with the pre-evaluation of 227 research entries, choosing only 64 for the Exhibit Poster Presentation on Day 1, and having the top 5 researches from each category (Life Sciences, Applied Sciences, Physical Sciences) to proceed in the Closed-Door Defense round on Day 2. Day 3 kicked off with the Final Defense Round between the top 2 researches per category and finally crowned Philippine Science High School – Main Campus’ Reneez Felix and Aubrey Lipa as Grand Champions, bagging at least P10,000 prize for their research entitled

The series of talks in the YSC started with professionals talking about tips on oral communication and conducting research. It continued to the second day, having seminars which tackled emerging research fields and upcoming research opportunities. The first ever Research Fair Lab Tours was opened to the participants, giving them a chance to see firsthand the University Laboratory for Small Satellite and Space Engineering Systems (ULyS3ES) and the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB). The last set of YSC talks were about new research developments in the field of science and technology.

With the theme “CHRYSALIS: Transforming Youth Potential into Scientific Breakthroughs,” Research Fair 2020 reinvented itself to cater to today’s youth researchers, becoming a forefront manifestation of UP ALCHEMES’ commitment to promote and uphold academic excellence and benevolent service to the nation since 2002.
