Grandma charges family members P2,300 per head for Christmas dinner

While others might be in the spirit of giving without expecting anything in return during the holidays, a grandmother from the United Kingdom decided to charge her family £35 (around P2,300) per head for their Christmas feast — but for a very good reason.

Hayley Garbutt from Filey, North Yorkshire said she wants to turn the standard Christmas meal into an extravagant feast. The grandmother-of-four made sure she catered to every family member’s specific needs and she also did not hold back on her Christmas presents with the money she earned from the collection, Daily Mail reported on Tuesday, Dec. 24.

Garbutt catered to 12 people including her three children, their partners, her four grandkids and some friends. She said that she got her family to chip in before she went grocery shopping. The grandma got a total of  £420 (over P27,600) from her family, but Christmas dinner shopping only cost  £300 (over 19,700).

“I get all of my family to put in before I go and do the shop,” Garbutt was quoted saying.

Garbutt reasoned that the monetary collection was to focus on other aspects of the dinner, like Christmas gifts. She also made sure her growing family got their money’s worth with her buffet-style dinner set up, as per report.

“But it’s not that I’m being tight it means I get to spend more in other aspects then too, like presents,” Garbutt added. “This year the tree has so many presents stacked around it, that you can’t even see it.”

Garbutt also made sure that her family’s entertainment for the evening was covered. As per report, she usually dresses up as a reindeer or an elf to get into the spirit of Christmas. The grandmother expressed how important the holidays are for her, which is why she wants her family to get the best out of the experience.

“I love to see the kids open their presents, and love being close to all my family,” Garbutt was quoted as saying. “In truth, I’d probably say my family are spoilt at Christmas but that’s part of the fun of it.” JB
