Disney on Broadway characters are getting an imaginative costume makeover with the help of students at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).
The theatrical entertainment giant is celebrating its 25th anniversary by collaborating with 10 students from the fashion school on a design challenge that will see some of the most famous Disney heroines given a costume update. The reimagined, contemporary designs will go on show at the Art and Design Gallery in the school’s Pomerantz Art and Design Center from Sept. 19 to Oct. 6.
The display will include looks imagined for Elsa and Anna from “Frozen”, Belle from “Beauty and the Beast” and Jasmine from “Aladdin”. “The Little Mermaid” and “Mary Poppins” also feature on the list.
The students, who hail from all over the world, were selected from 100 applicants to display their work.
“We are delighted to partner with FIT and their talented students on this special design challenge,” said Robin Wyatt, vice president, Marketing, Disney Theatrical Productions, in a statement. “Each designer created contemporary sketches that are all unique interpretations of our beloved Disney on Broadway characters and we look forward to seeing their garments come to fruition.”
“FIT is thrilled to be part of Disney on Broadway’s 25th-anniversary celebration,” added Dr. Joyce F. Brown, president of FIT. “Our students-who share the Disney spirit of innovation-embraced the opportunity to participate in this project.” HM/JB
