Penn Badgley affirmed his stance that Joe is not a character that viewers should emulate.
Penn Badgley has recently gone viral on Twitter after he answered some fans’ requests to “kidnap them.” The actor reiterated to the press that though Joe may be charming, he is not someone to be emulated or idolized. And since he portrayed the character, he feels it is his responsibility to remind the public on the importance of not taking Joe’s persona too seriously.
“If we’re not careful, Joe can bring out the ‘Joe’ in us and we need to be careful of what we show [in the series],” Badgley adds.
Shay Mitchell also chimed in on the issue and advised viewers to be careful of what they deem to be “true” on social media. She adds, “the images you see [on social media] are highlight reels – they are the best parts of what you see in that person’s day. [and is, therefore, not reality].”
Penn Badgley and Shay Mitchell admitted to only liking certain aspects of the characters they portrayed.
For Penn Badgley, the only aspect he really liked about Joe is that he’s curious. Other than that, Badgley said he’s a “murderer” and that viewers should never look up to or romanticize him.
Shay Mitchell, likewise, agreed that there are only certain aspects of her character that she likes and for her, it’s mainly about how supportive she is about Beck (Elizabeth Lail).
