Komura; conference opens real dialogues on the business side of publishing and print

In a mission to educate, inspire, and connect artists and publishers with industry movers and shakers from local and international communities, Komura; founders, Czyka Tumaliuan of Kwago and Kayla Dionisio of Warehouse Eight, organized the first intimate conference focused on understanding the business side of creative pursuits in publishing and print—Komura; Studio.

To be launched on Nov 24, 2018 at Warehouse Eight, La Fuerza compound, Makati City, Komura; Studio will be accompanied by a gig organized by Echoes PH and a dedicated time for slow networking among the speakers and guests.

“Allergic talaga mga artists pag-usapan ang pera. Artists always focus on talking about their process and pushing for their causes. But developing a model to sustain our whys without compromising quality is as important as our craft. Kailangan tayo maging smart about money. We need to develop financial IQ so we can do more of what we truly love, so we can live off our passions,” Tumaliuan shared.

“We’re excited to talk about this almost ‘taboo’ in the conference with people who have a breadth of experience and are highly respected in their fields,” she added.

Featuring a mix of founders and independent agents from the arts, culture and tech sector, the program is heavy on Q&A and deep time for socials.

“We really don’t want to be another conference where speakers just show their portfolio from a stage. Like in all the events that Warehouse organizes, we want to remove the gap between the ‘expert’ and the ‘audience, ‘the experienced’ from the ‘the freshies’” Dionisio said.

“We want to create close connections among people. Most importantly, we want our guests to leave the conference with clear, tangible resolutions and answers that will really help them with whatever they’re going through in their creative life,” Dionisio added.

Panel from the Philippines: artist, curator and co-founder of Artbooks PH Ringo Bunoan; spoken word artist and radio host Kooky Tuason; Veer Technologies and VR Philippines founder Cristopher David; comics artist Manix Abrera; designer and Diyalogo co-owner Ian Quimbo; artist and educator Rommel Joson; and, computer scientist and CIIT founder Niel Dagondon.

Speakers from Southeast Asia: Indonesia-based artist and Krack! Studio co-founder Malcolm Smith; and Singapore-based book designer and The Press Room Singapore founder Kelley Cheng.

Komura; will be held at Warehouse Eight on November 24, 2-11PM. The event is limited to 120 seats. Regular tickets cost P3,000, while the student rate is P2,700. Tickets are inclusive of: admission to 9 talks on funding creative pursuits, a Komura; Studio kit, afternoon snacks, unlimited coffee by Candid, and a gig.
