When girls go through puberty, it’s not all whirlwind romances and fun sleepovers like many of the movies make it out to be. In reality, it’s a grueling and sometimes even, painful process that many females have to go through. Some countries in Africa and Asia, for instance, practice female genital mutilation to girls of a certain age. It’s a practice that is deemed “as a violation of the human rights of girls and women” by the World Health Organization, and it is one that can leave irreparable emotional scars.
This negative side to growing up is often overlooked by the media. But in Judy Blume’s fictional novel “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” the struggles of a pubescent girl are exposed. From having her first period to understanding religion, Blume’s novel is a coming-of-age story that you would not want to put down!

The story will soon hit the big screen as Blume recently sold the movie rights to “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.”
Deadline reports that the beloved 1970 novel will be adapted into film by producer James L. Brooks’ Gracie Films and Kelly Fremon Craig.
Brooks says he’s ecstatic to be given the opportunity to adapt it into a movie and he can’t wait to start filming.
“There’s something so timely and full of truth and I remember for me that at that age, it felt like a life raft at a time when you’re lost and searching and unsure. This book comes along and tells you [that] you’re not alone. Women remember where they were when they read it. I can’t think of another book you can say that about,” Brooks tells Deadline.
We definitely can’t wait to see Blume’s story in the cinemas! Until then, we’ll always have a copy of her novel to keep us company.
