International popstar and fashion mogul Rihanna has confirmed that she is no longer friends with Drake in an interview with Vogue.
Remember the 2016 VMAs, where Rihanna was honored with the Vanguard Award? MTV presents this prestigious award to performers with incredible accomplishments in music, and to be its recipient is considered an important milestone in a singer’s career. Drake was tasked to present the award to Rihanna in 2016, and he took that time to profess his undying love for her on live TV.
“She’s someone I’ve been in love with since I was 22 years old,” Drake said amidst cheers from the audience. Suddenly Rihanna’s big moment was about him and his feelings.
Apparently, it was that night that the friendship between the two began to fizzle out. In her Vogue interview, Rihanna talked about how uncomfortable Drake’s speech made her feel. The interviewer also noted that Rihanna “winces slightly at the mention of the rapper’s name before her eyes glaze over with cool indifference.”
“The VMAs is such a fan-focused awards show, so having that energy around me, and knowing the people who had received the award in the past, made it feel like a big deal,” the singer said. “Waiting through that speech was probably the most uncomfortable part. I don’t like too many compliments; I don’t like to be put on blast.”
When asked about the current state of their friendship, this was all she had to say:
“We don’t have a friendship now, but we’re not enemies either. It is what it is.”

All that aside, Rihanna also talked about what turning 30 has been like for her in the interview and shared that she has the same anxieties most women have at this age.
“OK, so now that I’m 30, are there things I’m supposed to do? Should I be worried? Should I be freezing my eggs? What do you do at 30?!” she said.
But of course Rihanna is far from being your average 30-year-old woman. The singer has been releasing chart-topping albums since she was discovered at 16, and she now sets her sights to another field to conquer—business. Her Fenty X Puma clothing, Fenty Beauty make-up line, and the upcoming Savage x Fenty lingerie line have all been received favorably and are quickly being established as well-loved brands. Apart from this, she has also worked on the upcoming Ocean’s 8 movie with other Hollywood A-listers like Sandra Bullock, Sarah Paulson, Cate Blanchett, and Anne Hathaway.
It’s not hard to imagine how hectic her day-t0-day is, but she also shared that she is now fully-committed to establishing a healthy work-life balance for herself:
“Even mentally, just to be away from my phone, to be in the moment, that has been key for my growth. Now, when I come to work, I’m all in. Because before you know it, the years will go by. I’m glad I’m taking the time. I’m happy,” she said.
Rihanna also talked about her next album, which a lot of people have been clamoring for—it’s been two years since ANTI, her last album, was released—and she revealed that she plans to make a reggae record this time. Her inspiration is no other than Bob Marley, who she calls as one of her favorite artists of all time.
When asked about how being put in the limelight as a teenager and being turned into a role model for other girls has affected her, she was honest about how she felt:
“That title was put on me when I was just finding my way, making mistakes in front of the world. I didn’t think it was fair,” she said. “Now I understand the concept, but at that time I was the same age as the girls who were looking up to me. And that’s a really hard place to be in as a teenager.”
