Welcome to another episode of “What The Fork?!”
This week, men on social media once again displayed their distasteful behavior after making unpleasant remarks following the death of filmmaker Jeff Baena, the husband of American actress Aubrey Plaza. And (rightfully so), they are under fire for their unsavory comments.
On January 5, 2025 (Manila time), fans and people in the film industry were shocked and devastated after learning about the death of Baena. As confirmed by TMZ, the filmmaker, who was married to Plaza in 2021 after being in a relationship for a decade, reportedly died by suicide.
Baena was known for directing the 2014 zombie comedy film Life After Beth which stars Plaza, the 2016 comedy-drama film Joshy, the 2017 medieval back comedy film The Little Hours, the 2020 psychological drama film Horse Girl, and the 2022 dark comedy film Spin Me Round.
Following the director’s death, fans took to social media to send their condolences to Baena’s family and pay tribute to him, remembering his works and contributions to independent cinema and Hollywood.
With everyone fighting on twitter right now, I want to step back from all the chaos and just take a moment to remember the man who has passed away.
Jeff Baena.

Everyone needs to send good vibes to Aubrey. I’ve lost quite a few people in my life, but it’s hard to imagine what she’d be going through right now.

Jeff Baena was a truly unique artistic voice, and our world is poorer without him in it. his cowriting credit for i heart huckabees is what i will remember him most fondly by – i attribute him with injecting the characters and dialogue with such specific offbeat rhythms pic.twitter.com/FEZGB4GUgx

However, a darker side of social media was then exposed as some users, particularly men, made inappropriate jokes about Plaza’s relationship status, jesting that The White Lotus actress is now single.

These unsavory comments were met with criticism from Plaza and Baena’s fans, calling the users out for their disgusting behavior and that they should give some respect to Baena, Plaza, and their family.
Aubrey Plaza’s husband k*lled himself and men in the replies talking about some “so she’s single now?” Zero empathy.
And I’m supposed to give a fuck about a male loneliness epidemic? Yeah okay.

men will bitch and moan about feminists not talking about the high suicide rate in men (not our job btw) but then go ahead and celebrate a man committing suicide just because his widow (Aubrey Plaza) is hot… like y'all are horrible, have some respect pic.twitter.com/Dh5g51AQhJ

People making "Aubrey Plaza is single again" jokes are the most unfunny people you'll ever come across. The only "funny" thing about those jokes is knowing that 99% of the people making them don't talk to any women.

‘aubrey plaza single’ is the LAST thing u should say. u are so fucked up. this is someone who has just passed and it’s okay to not be affected by the death of a stranger but as a decent human being u should be so ashamed for this. this is not okay. gtfo.

This topic does beg the question: Is basic human decency gone nowadays?
Our thoughts and prayers are with Plaza and Baena’s family and loved ones.
