Jung Woo-sung’s apology at film awards sparks mixed reactions, Hyeri’s ‘indifference’ stands out

In November 29, the 45th Blue Dragon Film Awards took place in South Korea, in which it recognized blockbuster hits and critically acclaimed films of high artistic value from the previous year for their excellence.

Jung Woo-sung, a veteran actor with a 30-year career in the competitive film industry, sparked controversy after confirming he is the biological father of model Moon Ga-bi’s son, born in March. A Korean news outlet reported that the model had hoped to marry Jung in order to “give her child a family,” but the actor refused.

The actor contemplated attending the award show but ultimately skipped the red carpet, appearing only on stage to present the Audience Choice Award, which was won by the historical drama film “Spring in Seoul,” in which he starred.

During his acceptance speech, Jung said, “I stand here today with Spring in Seoul, hoping my personal matters do not cast a shadow on this film or those who contributed to it.” He added, “To everyone who has supported me with love and expectations, I deeply apologize for causing worry and disappointment.” Jung concluded his speech by saying, “I will take all criticism upon myself and carry it. As a father, I will fulfill my responsibilities to my son to the end.”

While his composed and straightforward remarks drew attention, the reactions from fellow actors varied. As the camera panned, many were seen clapping and showing their enthusiasm for the actor. In contrast, actress Hyeri appeared with a composed expression, offering only a polite clap.

Her reaction caught the most attention from social media users. Meanwhile, some criticized Lim Ji Yeon, who enthusiastically clapped beside her.

Jung Woo-sung’s acknowledgment of his child born out of wedlock appears to signal a potential shift in South Korea’s traditional views on birth and family, as one province in the country has begun introducing support measures for children born to unmarried parents.
