Cynthia Erivo supports Wicked fans singing along despite theater restrictions

Wicked star Cynthia Erivo shared her thoughts on the no-sing-along rule implemented in several theaters during screenings of her blockbuster movie musical with Ariana Grande.

According to Indy Star, before the opening of Wicked in the theaters last November 22, AMC theatres created a 30-second advisory with clips from the movie that said, “At AMC Theatres, silence is golden. No talking. No texting. No singing. No wailing. No Flirting. And absolutely no name-calling. Enjoy the magic of movies.”

In addition, Ryan Noonan, the national theater chain’s spokesperson, said in response to an email by the publication that “AMC has a long-standing policy that prohibits disruptive behavior.”

“The ‘Wicked’ pre-show spot [which includes ‘no singing’] incorporates the themes of the film as a fun, engaging reminder to moviegoers to not disrupt the experience for those around them as they enjoy the show,” he added.

During the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York on November 28, Erivo was asked by NBC hosts how she felt about the issue dividing musical fans online, particularly regarding audiences singing along during theater screenings.

The Elphaba actress seems open to the idea of moviegoers singing along, “Good! I’m okay with it,” was her response. “We spent this long singing it ourselves, it’s time for everyone else to join in. It’s wonderful,” Erivo added.

Sing-along screenings of the movie musical Wicked were being scheduled and offered in roughly 1,000 North American cinemas starting on Dec. 25, where theatergoers can channel their inner Glinda and Elphaba, according to Variety’s report.
