(G)I-DLE members get flamed for renewing contract with record label

K-pop girl group (G)I-DLE announced all members’ renewal of contact with their record label, social media users expressed disbelief.

During their winning speech at the Melon Music Awards 2024, the girl group’s leader, Jeon So Yeon, addressed disbandment rumors. In November 30, the girl group won the Record of the Year.

“My contract expired, and these days there are many articles being released that are like ‘(G)I-DLE is disbanding’ or ‘(G)I-DLE is over.’ However, not me alone, but the five of us all decided to renew our contracts together. We had the discussion before coming on stage today. It’s not just me, and yes, it’s all five of us members together,” she said.

She added, “The five of us will be together from now on, next year, the year after, and really forever, so I hope NEVERLAND won’t worry. We will give back with good music next year, as well.”

Following the announcement of the contract renewals, CUBE Entertainment released a statement confirming the news.

“We are happy to announce that we have successfully completed the renewal of all members […] We would like to express our sincere gratitude to (G)I-DLE for their trust and commitment, which have made this important step possible as we move forward into an exciting new chapter,” the statement said.

Several social media users, however, expressed their disapproval of the girl group’s announcement.

“They [have] been shading cube for like 3 years and they still renewed???” one social media user from X (formerly known as Twitter) said.

Another social media user said, “So all that big talk for the past couple of years was for nothing? 😭😭 very performative man i hate when ppl can’t stand on business.”

“Imagine staying with the company that failed to protect your friend and shattered her dreams. i’d be furious. no contract improvements could ever make up for that. the only way they could truly redeem themselves is by bringing soojin back,” a third social media user said.

It can be recalled that CUBE Entertainment terminated former member Soojin’s contract back in 2022, following bullying allegations about her.

Some fans also showed their support for the group’s decision to renew the contract.

“It’s no surprise tho, Even if cube is not the best the girls could form a team around them so it feels just right like this. The blue box is also good to take the hits when needed!” one X user said.

Another social media user said, “Thank God, so much noise saying disband! Disband! I’m glad they made their own choice.”

(G)I-DLE won the Record of the Year award at the Melon Music Awards 2024 on Nov. 30.
