Debate on love vs. priorities heats up after ‘Hello, Love, Again’ release

Amidst the success of the sequel movie ‘Hello, Love, Again,’ moviegoers took their takeaways from the movie to social media, discussing the main characters’ decisions about life and relationship.

The discourse started on X (formerly known as Twitter) when one social media user posted a screenshot of their recollection of the movie from a TikTok video.

I totally understand Joy, but throughout the entire film, I felt so sorry for Ethan. In Hello, Love, Goodbye, Ethan let Joy choose for herself, and in Hello, Love, Again, Ethan returned with the hope that this time he would be part of Joy’s plans. Yet, everything was still about her own benefit. He had to be made to feel guilty by Martha’s letter before he truly saw Ethan’s worth and effort, which began all the way from Hong Kong. Again, I totally get Joy. But I hope you also understand Ethan, who has always chosen Joy from the very beginning.]” the video said, while the X user captioned “FINALLY, SOMEONE SAID IT!”

Various social media users have divided reactions and opinions regarding the takeaway of the reposted TikTok video.

“I have a different take on this but that doesn’t mean na iinvalidate ko ung Ethans in real life. As a breadwinner na madaming priorities in life, gets na gets ko si Joy. [As a breadwinner with many priorities in life, I totally understand Joy.] And I even felt na Joy should’ve pursued her US path and just see where life takes you. Mind over heart. Haha,” one social media user said. Understandably, Joy’s character resonates deeply with many, especially in the Philippines, where families rely on breadwinners. In fact, around 75% of families in the country are vulnerable to both emotional and financial struggles when a breadwinner passes away.

Another social media user said, “I hate that most of the takeaways were about happiness found in another person and that the cheating factor was not considered. Well, people are different naman talaga. Just glad that some are seeing the other perspective in which most of them ay Millenials. 🤭”

A number of social media users also agreed with the post, saying that they understand where the male protagonist of the film is coming from.

“Agree! i also realized na hindi si joy ang nawala, it was actually ethan. rewatching hlg (Hello, Love, Goodbye) after hla (Hello, Love, Again) made me realize ang galing ni alden in perfectly capturing that transition onscreen. yet, kahit nawala si ethan one thing remains the same—he will always choose joy no matter what,” a social media user said.

Whether sympathizing with Joy’s struggle or understanding Ethan’s enduring devotion, it all boils down to our own perspectives. We interpret their decisions differently, and that’s perfectly okay.

‘Hello, Love, Again,’ the sequel to the hit 2019 film Hello, Love, Goodbye, is in its second week of showing.
