Girl in a jacket

SNL host Bowen Yang receives backlash for ‘mocking’ Chappell Roan

In Saturday Night Live’s ‘Weekend Update’ segment on September 29, Yang dressed up as Moo Deng, the viral pygmy hippo from Thailand, as he directly referenced the singer’s recent scuffle with fame.

‘Weekend Update’ host Colin Jost introduced the context of visitors throwing shellfish and bananas to Moo Deng in her zoo enclosure to get its attention, he then called Yang dressed as Moo Deng for comments.

“For the past 10 weeks, I have been going nonstop. Running around, eating lettuce, trying to bite the water from a hose […] It has come to the point where I need to set some boundaries,” Yang referenced Roan as she announced via Instagram story that she needed to take a break from performing to focus on her health.

The comedian proceeded to make references to the singer’s recent statements about parasocial relationships with fans.

“Reminder: women owe you nothing. When I’m in my enclosure tripping over stuff, biting my trainer’s knee, I am at work. That is the project. Do not yell my name or expect a photo; just because I’m your parasocial bestie or because you appreciate my talent,” he said.

Yang also referenced Roan’s famous line “your favorite artist’s favorite artist,” which he changed to “your favorite hippo’s favorite hippo.”

Jost commented that Moo Deng’s life resembled the musician’s life lately, then proceeded to ask if the Hippo knows Chappell Roan.

“I’m 10 weeks old, Colin, of course, I know Chappell Roan. By the way, leave her alone. Let her take as much time as she needs for her mental health…it’s what society does. It puts young women on pedestals only to know them down with shellfish,” Yang said.

Yang also referenced the recent controversial take of Roan not endorsing a presidential candidate.

The comedian’s repeated nod to Roan’s recent activity raised some eyebrows from fans.

“Two men mocking a woman’s mental health real nice,” a social media user from X (formerly known as Twitter) said.

“I hope Chappell opens her mouth abt this bc omfg y’all don’t stop this is such a vicious cycle omfg. The pop girls have been having massive hate trains this year, but like this is turning into bullying like omg,” another X user said.

Yang then posted on his Instagram story with a screenshot of Variety’s initial article about the segment, saying, “Oh geez. “Mocks”??? If my personal stance and the piece aren’t absolutely clear in terms of supporting her, then there it is, I guess. Everything that she has ever asked for has been reasonable, and even then, we can connect it to another story about boundaries or whatever. Needing the hose rn…”
