Internet erupts in memes after the arrest of dismissed Bamban mayor Alice Guo in Indonesia

“Welcome back to the Philippines, our suspended mayor!”

Filipinos online have been having a field day as of late poking fun at Alice Guo, ever since the controversies surrounding the now-dismissed Bamban, Tarlac mayor has come under intense spotlight: From her claims to be a simple person who grew up on a farm, to her iconic line “Your honor, hindi ko na po maalala” (Your honor, I cannot remember anymore).

This time, she became, yet again, the source of mirth as it was confirmed that the dismissed mayor had been arrested in Jakarta, Indonesia.

If you haven’t caught on to what’s happening yet, let us give you a brief summary: Guo, whose real name is Guo Hua Ping, has been on the run since July amid her ties to illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) and her citizenship.

Despite being on the lookout, she was able to sneakily depart from the country with her supposed siblings Wesley Guo and Sheila Guo, along with her business associate Cassandra Li Ong, to which the latter was arrested and detained.

The dismissed mayor, on the other hand, slipped past the borders by taking boats to cross through Malaysia and Singapore, on her way to Indonesia, where she was caught and arrested by Indonesian officials.

As soon as the news of the event started circulating online, along with a photo and video of her arrest, the inevitable happened on the Filipino side of the internet: the memes featuring the arrested mayor took over.

So, let the meme games begin:

Now, there’s no denying that these memes are funny and witty, but let’s still remember that behind all these laughs, there is a serious issue at play and we can only hope that this new breakthrough will further the investigation to expose the systemic roots of the POGO problem in the country.

But for now, welcome back to the Philippines, Alice Guo!
