Yoga move causes devastating accident, leaves woman paralyzed

A woman who attempted a new yoga pose that resulted in paralysis from the neck down is now in need of round-the-clock care for the remainder of her life.

Exercise was something that Abby Weiss, who hails from California, was really passionate about, especially acroyoga, which is a combination of yoga and acrobatics.

The 32-year-old attempted a difficult acroyoga pose in June when she fell and hurt her spinal cord. She was rendered paralyzed from the neck down by the horrific incident.

Weiss loved going outdoors and being active, which made the accident and her current condition even more painful, according to her distraught father.

“She said the other day it feels like she’s in a straight jacket,” he told WISTV. “She can’t move, everything’s got to be done for her.”

According to a GoFundMe established by friends to assist Weiss’ family in covering the rising expenses of her family’s medical treatment, she was a pediatric speech therapist and company owner prior to the catastrophic event.

“The medical bills are astronomical,” her dad stated. “And there is no end.”

She is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital while she is back in Chicago with her family.

Her aunt, Judy Walsher, told the news program that things “didn’t have to be like this” as she was packing up her apartment, which she is no longer able to live in.

Her father remarked that prior to his daughter’s injury, he had no idea what acroyoga was.

He said that if he “had known the type of maneuvers she was doing I would have told her not to do it.”

“I don’t think she would have listened,” he added.

Although doctors warned them that there is no assurance she will ever recover, the family is hopeful that after the inflammation goes down, she will be able to move a little bit.

According to the most recent update posted on July 27, her friend Renee Smith reported seeing encouraging indications on her GoFundMe page.

“Abby went on to breathe on her own for an entire hour!!” the fundraiser added. “While this may seem small, this is a step forward and we need to celebrate.”
