Katy Perry’s latest music video, “Lifetimes,” is now under investigation for potential environmental damage after it was revealed that the production company filmed without proper authorization at the protected sand dunes of Ses Salines Natural Park in Spain’s Balearic Islands.
The Environment Department of the Balearic Islands issued a press release on August 14, announcing that the production did not secure the necessary permits to film at the sand dunes of S’Espalmador island, a site known for its delicate and ecologically valuable ecosystem.
Other parts of the music video, such as scenes of Perry at various beaches, clubs, and dancing through cities, were filmed in different locations throughout the region. The video also includes scenes of Perry playing in protected areas marked with ropes indicating restricted zones. The investigation will assess whether filming in these areas resulted in any environmental damage.
While the department stressed that the situation is considered an infringement rather than a criminal act, they also noted that proper authorization for such projects could have prevented these issues.
The production company’s failure to follow protocol has raised concerns about the impact on the fragile dune system, which the Balearic government describes as holding significant ecological value.
Perry’s previous single, “Woman’s World,” also faced challenges. The song, which debuted at No. 63 on the Billboard Hot 100, failed to make a significant impact despite its ambitious feminist themes. Many social media users are saying the song’s attempt at a powerful message was overshadowed by its perceived lack of substance and unconvincing lyrics.
One user wrote, “This all feels like AI and it’s kind of embarrassing that it’s not.” Some social media users are also saying that the song seems like it was written by a man. Others argue that the music video caters to the male gaze, with remarks that “‘Woman’s World’ then proceeds to sexualize and objectify women.”
As of writing, there has been no comment from Katy Perry’s team regarding the investigation into the “Lifetimes” music video. Meanwhile, “Lifetimes” is the second single from Perry’s upcoming album, 143.
