In honor of the 30th anniversary of the animated series, a new ‘Magic Knight Rayearth’ anime project is now currently in the works.
The announcement of the project was made via X (formerly Twitter) unveiling a new trailer and visual featuring some of the original manga illustrations and scenes from the 1994 anime series.
Their post wrote, “Launching a new project for Magic Knight Rayearth! In celebration of the ‘Magic Knight Rayearth’ anime’s 30th anniversary, a new animation project has been launched! Stay tuned!”

Details regarding the release date, the anime’s format, and other production details are to be announced at a later date.
“Magic Knight Rayearth” revolves around three high school girls named Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu. During their field trip to the Tokyo Tower, they magically get transported into the fantasy world of Cephiro. Upon their arrival, they are greeted immediately by the mage named Clef, who informs them that the world is dying after the priest Zagato kidnapped Princess Emeraude, whose prayers maintain the state of the world. Cephiro would be on the brink of collapse if she’s unable to sing. Filled with magical powers as Magic Knights, Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu must learn how to work together in order to save and survive Cephiro.
The 1994 TV series had a total of 49 episodes directed by Toshihiro Hirano at TMS Entertainment. This also inspired a three-episode orignal anime project entitled “Rayearth” that launched back in 1997 featuring an alternate retelling of the story. The TV mini-series was directed by Keitaro Motonaga and Toshiki Hirano also under TMS Entertainment.
Artist group CLAMP released the original manga in Kodanasha’s Nakayoshi magazine from 1993 to 1996 having six volumes released in Japan.
