Beyoncé’s name to be added to French encyclopedia dictionary

From sold-out concerts, grammy awards, and top hits, Beyoncé has become a hallmark of an exceptional singer and songwriter.

Queen Bey’s domination surpasses popular culture and music, as she has been shortlisted in the latest edition of the French encyclopedia dictionary Petit Larousse Illustré which was first published in 1905, hence embedding her influence in French history.

As reported, Beyoncé will be listed as a proper noun and will be given a definition of an “American singer of R&B and pop.”

Her name will also feature her Louisiana Creole heritage which refers to a group of people with roots stretching back to colonial times when Louisiana was under the French and Spanish rule before being part of the United States.

According to reports, in an episode of 2020 ‘In My Head with Heather Thomson,’ interestingly, Beyoncé’s name was supposedly spelled as “Beyincé,” this is the surname that her grandparents’ from Tina Knowle’s (Beyoncé’s mother) side have carried. However, the hospital messed up Tina’s name and refused to change it.

Beyoncé asked her mom why she didn’t correct it, and Tina answered, “I did one time. The first time, and I was told be happy that you’re getting a birth certificate because, at one time, Black people didn’t get birth certificates.”

Moreover, more than 150 new words will be added to this year’s Petit Larousse Illustré which have shown ‘developments or strong movements’ this year. Their selection process according to the head of dictionaries Carine Girac-Marinier involved sensing the familiarity of the words among French-speaking communities and determining how the selected words would show the value of Petit Larousse which is ‘excellence and promotion of French culture.’

Included in the shortlist of 40 of the encyclopedia dictionary are Cate Blanchett, LeBron James, and Christopher Nolan who have all excelled in their respective professions.

Beyoncé and his family faced racial discrimination through a piece of paper, but because of her dedication, talent, and passion, she was able to turn her name’s complicated origin around and into an important piece of French history. Now, her name is an emblem of an empowered black woman.
