‘Duck craze era’: Filipinos spice up OOTDs with little duck hair clips

Have you recently taken a stroll and seen people wearing yellow rubber duckies over their heads? Well, just so you know, the duck hair clip is the newest, and maybe most absurd, fashion trend that we were not expecting.

Like most fads, you can find the newest one on TikTok with only a click. Since ducks are currently quite trendy, several social media users shared videos of people they’ve seen wearing the widespread duck hair clips, and I’m telling you, they’re everywhere!

Recall that the first rubber ducks were reportedly designed to be chew toys for babies and pets, such as dogs. Subsequently, the contemporary bath buddy came into being when two different developers put out concepts, and it has since been a part of our bathtime. Now, unlike the history of the rubber duckie itself, the growing trend of Filipinos wearing little rubber duckie hairpins is more difficult to pin down.

If one were to trace the origins of the craze, though, at least locally, it appears that the duck epidemic emerged in Baguio City, where sellers offered the item at public market booths with other bizarre designs.

By February, it had spread outside Baguio City, with the trend being seen in La Union, Pampanga, Laguna, and Ilocos Norte. Recently, many visitors and day trippers during the Chinese New Year festivities in Binondo appeared to proudly wear the yellow duck hairpiece as well.

As with most things of this kind, the general sentiment is that seeing a handful of little rubber duckies bouncing around people’s heads is just “cute.” Since they are harmless, incredibly inexpensive, and relatively easy to find, the trend of using rubber duckies as hair accessories quickly gained traction among younger generations and anyone who wishes to liven up their outfit of the day (OOTD).

Even though some people think the fad is quite ridiculous, many still want to go along the yellow duck trend. After all, fashion is intended to be enjoyable. As they say, you do you!
Since then, the trend has spread across the country, and now everyone is asking the same thing: “May bibe na ba ang lahat? [does everyone have a duck?]”
