This Barbie is having mixed feelings towards the Oscar nominations.
Man, The Academy isn’t being too slick about their inferiority complex when it comes to successful women in the film industry. But, is it really all that deep?
On January 23, 2024, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences finally revealed its list of nominees for the upcoming 96th Academy Awards, which is set to take place on March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.
Among the stellar nom’s list, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” had dominated the list with 13 nominations, which was followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” with 11 nominations and Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10 nominations.
The legendary pop culture phenomenon of “Barbenheimer”—the portmanteau of the films “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” is also going neck and neck in a number of categories, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Production Design.
This year’s Academy Awards also has many firsts for many actors, directors, and writers: Ten actors who appeared in different films last year also received their first Oscar nominations: Emily Blunt, Danielle Brooks, Sterling K. Brown, Colman Domingo, America Ferrera, Lily Gladstone (who is also the first Native American woman to have been nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actress), Cillian Murphy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Jeffrey Wright, and Sandra Hüller.
Three female-directed films have also taken the spotlight for having been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture: Greta Gerwig with “Barbie”, Celine Song with “Past Lives”, and Justine Triet with “Anatomy of a Fall.”
Despite the numerous firsts and “finally!” reactions to the actors, actresses, and films nominated for an Academy Award, many were quite shocked to see Margot Robbie, the actress who embodied Barbie to her core, and Greta Gerwig, the director and brain behind the “biggest movie of 2023” to have been snubbed from getting the Best Actress award and Best Director categories.
The snub of both Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig at their respective categories also came as a shock to their co-stars, especially Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera. Gosling specifically said, “There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.”
If I see one more dude post about how Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig not being nominated for Best Actress and Best Director respectively isn’t a snub or is no big deal, I’m gonna lose it. pic.twitter.com/0Ei4xLC4SS

I feel bad for Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie. She made a movie about dolls and how patriarchy ruins a good thing(ah the irony). It was the highest grossing movie of the year. Margot Robbie made the perfect Barbie. I am pretty sure Ryan is equally pissed about this snub. pic.twitter.com/iF3iouNlXE

Ryan Gosling's Ken was inspired, and he deserves the Oscar. Margot Robbie was also great and probably should have been nominated. The Greta Gerwig snub is an outrage.

For all the people (mostly men) who said they didn't
get the Barbie movie. The snub delivered to Greta Gerwig, and Margot Robbie by the voters of the Academy pretty much explains the point of the movie. So disappointed.

So Ryan Gosling’s nominated for playing ken but Margot Robbie isn’t nominated for playing barbie… in barbie #Oscars

everyone paid attention when we were talking about harvey weinstein and how he abused his power as a producer and yet here we are watching women producers like margot robbie and emma stone do good work and people are acting like it’s less important than acting lol
— jourdain searles (@judysquirrels) January 24, 2024
Barbie marketing has done such a good job of positioning the movie and its themes that certain people earnestly believe that Margot Robbie not getting an acting nomination is an heinous example of misogyny and slight against feminism

i miss when barbie was supposed to be this fun and cute movie written and directed by greta gerwig starring margot robbie and ryan gosling and everything was giggles and excitement why did the whole conversation around the movie start getting THAT annoying pic.twitter.com/JQ50ZpaFbl

Margot Robbie wasn’t nominated for best actress. A category thats famously dominated by men. https://t.co/A7zQAvxUJO

Ryan Gosling, while deserving, got an Oscar nomination for Barbie while Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie didn’t? Completely proving the point of the movie in 20 fucking 24 you cannot make this up #Oscars2024 #Oscars pic.twitter.com/EvnPJcP8Xn

Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie literally gave us Barbie by directing and acting, and were snubbed??? #Oscars2024 pic.twitter.com/Fcu8LCZi1i

Wait Ryan Gosling got nominated for his role as Ken, but Margot Robbie didn't get nominated for Barbie?! And Greta got snubbed for Best Director?!?!
Way to justify the literal plot of the movie @TheAcademy 🥴 #Oscars2024 pic.twitter.com/6MEHaSeTjZ

If Margot Robbie didn't get an Oscar for I, Tonya for Babylon and Barbie then what will she get an Oscar for? #Oscars2024 pic.twitter.com/lSMFjwwgl1

i don’t think margot robbie should be nominated AT ALL however… if i were her and played BARBIE in BARBIE and was the only one not to get a nomination i’d do something drastic 😭😭 https://t.co/j7dS8y44Qe

greta gerwig being snubbed at the #Oscars despite barbie being the ONLY $1 billion movie solely directed by a woman feels VERY sus to me… pic.twitter.com/cjzqkmOzYU

While there was a resounding feeling of disappointment over the snub of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, there were a couple of posts that basically told the people that there were still some things to celebrate in the nominations, such as Margot Robbie and Emma Stone’s first nominations as Producers, and Lily Gladstone being the first Indigenous (Native American) woman to be nominated for Best Actress.
Others also said that there are more pressing issues for people to focus on, for example, the ongoing genocides in different parts of the world and the plight of women affected by these ongoing humanitarian crises.
Margot Robbie was nominated for an Oscar for her work as a producer on Barbie, work about which she has spoken extensively. But maybe you could have made the movie better by cutting out the song everyone loved https://t.co/WzoycKXIG0

a native american woman is (almost certainly) going to win best actress for the first time in history and instead of like celebrating that countless film journos are implying that margot robbie not being nominated in the same category is somehow a loss for feminism https://t.co/GpvEnBidfk

this is the performance that should be getting the margot robbie traction because its actually deserving of an oscar and its much more nuanced regarding issues of society pic.twitter.com/Mojdd9ez2Q

Replace all this Margot Robbie didn't get an Oscar nomination with Greta Lee then we can talk. https://t.co/npNEi6CS4e pic.twitter.com/o97tZYUsoK

the idea that margot robbie not getting a best actress nom means the academy “missed the point of barbie” implies that lily gladstone’s nom means they understood the point of killers of the flower moon, which i do not believe is true
— riley rethal • listen to bds (@rileyrethal) January 24, 2024
The fact that so many Americans think that Margot Robbie can stand in for all women but Lily Gladstone cannot also reveals to us why so many Americans also think that Barbie not sweeping all the awards was the worst thing to happen so far in 2024.

A 300% increase in miscarriages, cesareans performed without anaesthetic, tent fabric used as menstrual pads, and targeted killings of pregnant women by Israeli snipers. Not a word from white feminists
But they’re going mental cuz Margot Robbie didnt get an oscar nom for Barbie.

If only white feminists cared that Israel is killing 2 Gazan mothers every hour the way they care about the Oscars snubbing Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig

bringing this back. i promise you margot robbie is very happy with the outcome you can put the discourse to rest https://t.co/Ok7Dhkz7gc

Gazan women are using tent scraps as pads and miscarriages have increased by 300% but plz all you third wave white feminists keep petitioning for the Barbie movie https://t.co/NAr8aq4McY
— AN🍉 (@_artfulnerd) January 25, 2024
i loved barbie but if your "feminism" stops at celebrities winning awards and doesn't extend to the very real feminine hygiene issues happening in gaza right now then your feminism is selective and you should probably rethink what you spend ur time and energy being outraged about

exactly. pic.twitter.com/P144KdOZCH
— annie (@incepthion) January 25, 2024
i promise neither margot robbie nor greta gerwig care that much about not being nominated for those categories, there is much bigger issues in the world to worry about so can we please drop this whole thing and move on https://t.co/Tfmzzf664O

where’s all this energy for Celine Song and Greta Lee ??? pic.twitter.com/48fY0zaC8H

The internet will trick you into thinking you can only feel one thing at once but yes you can celebrate that one female director and a Native American actress got nominated while also being mad that Greta gerwig didn't https://t.co/zHcbMiHvWS

The snubbing of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig may have been the biggest let-downs from the Oscar nominations this year, let’s not forget that our favorite pink movie from last year received a total of 8 nods from The Academy!
That’s still a win, right?
