Fil-Am cinematographer Matthew Libatique to receive an AFI Franklin J. Schaffner Medal

Well-known cinematographer Matthew Libatique will be an honoree for the 2024 AFI Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony for the Franklin J. Schaffner Medal which gives recognition to the exceptional talents of AFI Conservatory Alumni.

The ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theatre on April 27, 2024, and will honor the career of actress Nicole Kidman.

Some of the previous honorees of this award are Lesli Linka Glatter, Siân Heder, Patty Jenkins, Janusz Kamiński, Mimi Leder, David Lynch, Terrence Malick, Melina Matsoukas, Rachel Morrison, Darren Aronofsky, who turns out to be Libatique’s longtime collaborator with films such as “Black Swan,” “Noah,” and “Requiem for a Dream” to name a few.

AFI President and CEO, Bob Gazzale stated that “Matthew Libatique is one of our generation’s defining voices in the art of visual storytelling. Now, AFI is honored to shine the light upon him – celebrating his impact on the art form and the pride he brings us as a graduate of the AFI Conservatory.”

Matthew Libatique was born and raised in Elmhurst, Queens in New York City but he is of Filipino descent as his parents came from the Philippines. He attended California State University, Fullerton where he studied sociology and communications. He then took his Master’s in cinematography at the AFI Conservatory.

The cinematographer had recently collaborated with actor-writer-director Bradley Cooper on “A Star is Born,” which earned his second Oscar nomination. His latest project “Maestro” is well expected to earn him his third nomination.

Other movies he has worked on include “Don’t Worry Darling,” “The Prom,” “The Whale,” and “Birds of Prey.”

The televised special, which will air on TNT and TCM, does not have a set date yet. The broadcast date is yet to be announced.
