Filipino social media users call out state university for ‘insensitive’ remark toward NLE taker

On Saturday, Visayas State University announced the results of the November 2023 Nursing Licensure Examination (NLE), revealing another year of high institutional passing rate. Fifty-three first-time takers from VSU passed the exam, giving the university a 98.15% institutional passing percentage.

However, many social media users noticed the part of the caption made by the university’s Facebook page, in which it separated the remaining percent by describing them as a “lone repeater.” This sparked outrage from people who found the caption to be insensitive and disgraceful.

Many criticized the university’s social media team for not properly reviewing the update and letting an insensitive message be posted publicly. Some also called for the person responsible for the said post be made to publicly apologize about the mishap.

Not long after the call out to the post, the university edited its caption and served a public apology on the comment section. They also published an apology post, which bizarrely referenced the earthquake as reason for what happened.

Many did not accept the apology as the statements published seemed to minimize the blame on the university. Some have described their reasoning as some form of gaslighting.

As suggested by some Filipino internet users, perhaps we should have another layer of approval for social media posts on brand and community pages to review their content to avoid damage to others and themselves in the future.

Still, congratulations to all who passed the November 2023 NLE and to the Visayas State University for another year of maintaining its high institutional passing rate. Congratulations to those who keep trying their best to achieve their dreams. And to the ‘lone repeater,’–we’re always rooting for you.
