Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage has hinted at retiring from movie acting soon, as he only has ‘three or four more movies’ left in him. In a recent interview, Cage was very articulate in how he approached the craft of acting and its various genres, which made him realize how much he has done at this point and how long he will keep on doing it.
He said, “I mean, I like staying fresh. I mean, I like to keep mixing it up. I don’t want to get stuck in any genre or any performance style. I want to do it all. And I feel that I’ve, at this point – after 45 years of doing this; that in over 100 movies – I feel I’ve pretty much said what I’ve had to say with cinema.”
The 59-year-old star, who has appeared in at least one film every year for the last 37 years, is looking forward to a graceful exit from the business he so much loved.
“I’d like to leave on a high note and say, ‘Adios,'” Cage shared. “I think I have to do maybe three or four more movies before I can get there, and then hopefully switch formats and go into some other way of expressing my acting.”
Aside from getting that well-deserved rest once it is all said and done, Cage was also reflecting on the feeling of being with his family full-time, especially now that he is turning 60 in January.
“I was taking stock of how much time I had left. I thought, ‘Ok, my dad died at 75, I’m going to be turning 60. If I’m lucky, I have maybe a good 15 years and hopefully more. What do I want to do with those 15 years, using my father as the model? It occurred very clearly to me that I want to spend time with my family,” Cage added.
Meanwhile, Cage expressed his interest in reading books when he retires.
“I’d like to read a book a week. I wanna spend more time with my daughter. I’m taking more stock of what’s important.”
For all Nic Cage fans out there, do not worry one bit. The prolific actor has made it clear that he is open to exploring and pursuing other acting mediums.
“I am very interested in immersion streaming with episodic television,” Cage explained. “I have seen things that can be done now with characters and the time they’re given to express themselves. I saw Bryan Cranston stare at a suitcase for an hour on one episode of Breaking Bad. We don’t have time to do that in a feature film, so maybe television is the next best step for me. We’ll see,” he said.
