Nadine Lustre, Christophe Bariou share their journey into winemaking that birthed Maison Bukana

What started as a sacred space that sits between the mesmerizing ocean and river mangroves–the fusion of French and Filipino rich culture that the luxurious, dreamy villa of Maison Bukana in Siargao offers can now be experienced differently through Maison Bukana Wines.

The brand had its genesis when Nadine and Christophe’s friend approached and pitched them the idea of starting a wine business. With the couple’s passion for wines, they both naturally said yes, and the rest is history.

Being the only full-blooded Filipina in their business venture, Nadine shared that she learned about the craftsmanship that goes into winemaking. Before delving into the wine industry, Nadine said that she loved wine as a casual drinker, and now, she appreciates the intricate process behind creating quality wine.

“This experience is like no other. We learned so much about the craftsmanship that goes into winemaking. We also learned the history of winemaking, visited vineyards and cellars, and talked to professionals from the wine industry,” Nadine told INQUIRER.net at the launching of Maison Bukana Wines on October 16. “We also visited the Champagne region because we are learning about champagnes, but that’s a different story.”

She also shared the minor challenges their business faced throughout their journey, involving delays in shipment and logistics, among others. “We have only experienced minor pushbacks, and all of them are beyond our control, but so far, we’re good.”

Nadine and Christophe’s journey into winemaking has birthed Maison Bukana Wines with three selections that wine enthusiasts can relish and indulge in.

“Les Beaux Jours” is an exquisite rosé wine that harmonizes the citrus flavors of strawberries and raspberries, making it a perfect drink to enjoy while basking in the golden rays of the sun. Its white wine, “Presqu’ile,” captures the floral and citrus flavor profiles of tropical fruits. With hints of green apple, pear, and white peach, this pale gold-colored drink leaves a clean, refreshing, and satisfying finish. Lastly, “Vendange d’Ete” is an elegant red wine that accentuates the rich taste of luscious black cherry and plum. Its dark ruby color paired with the velvety texture makes it a drink of choice to relish under the moonlight.

According to Nadine, the wines came from Bordeaux, France, but they crafted every inch of it for the Filipinos to indulge in. “Our wines are developed in France, but we crafted and designed it for the Filipino palate and for them to enjoy it,” she explained.

Christophe also shared that French and Filipinos are similar when it comes to the tradition of social gatherings. This is why they envision Maison Bukana Wines to be a staple in Filipino gatherings.

“We want [Maison Bukana Wines] to be a part and staple of every Filipino gathering. We want them to enjoy it on every occasion, because our wines cater to everyone, offering three flavors that are perfect for any weather,” he added.

When asked about their favorite flavors, Nadine shared her fondness of “Presqu’ile,” Maison Bukana white wine, while Christophe picked “Vendange d’Ete,” the Maison Bukana red wine.

While Maison Bukana Wines’ story is only starting, Nadine and Christophe have learned many things already during their journey in this business venture. When asked about a piece of advice for those who want to dabble in the wine industry, Nadine said not to be discouraged.

“I’ve gone through a lot of things before and my advice is don’t be easily discouraged. We will face a lot of obstacles along the way, but let’s not be discouraged and just hold on to your passion and goal,” she shared.
