National Geographic, other affiliate channels cease broadcast in Southeast Asia, including PH

Starting October 1, Filipinos will no longer able to watch other Disney channels here in the country, including National Geographic, with the announcement from the Walt Disney Company to cease the broadcast of their TV channels in Southeast Asia.

An advisory regarding the cessation of broadcast was posted on the SKYcable website. Besides National Geographic, other channels that have also ended their broadcasts include National Geographic Wild, Baby TV, Star Chinese Movies, and Star Chinese Channel.

Their last transmission date for the said channels was on September 30 at 11:59 p.m.

It was announced in June of this year that these channels would be ceasing their broadcast on the said date.

Viewers can still access content from these channels through Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+, which is now fully available in most of the Asia-Pacific regions. The platform features movies and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and Star—the general entertainment brand of Disney.

The said closure follows a similar move back in 2021 when they announced that some Disney TV Channels would be shutting down as the company focuses its shift to streaming.

“As part of the Walt Disney Company’s global effort to pivot towards a D2Cfirst model and further grow our streaming services, the company is consolidating its Media Networks business primarily in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong. These efforts will help us align our resources more efficiently and effectively to current and future business needs,” the company stated.

They added, “Disney will continue to have a strong media entertainment business in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong that includes our direct-to-consumer business, studio entertainment, consumer products, games and publishing business, serving consumers and partners alike in the region.”
