Gallons and gallons of wine were wasted as a flood in a small town in Portugal occurred after two tanks filled with red wine exploded from a distillery.
On September 11, a video was posted online showing the vino rushing down a steep hill through the town of São Lorenco de Bairro. The said town has a population of about 2,000 residents.
Local outlets have reported that the flood is estimated to be about 2.2 million liters or 600,000 gallons of wine which is enough to fill approximately 2,933,333 wine bottles.
The residents still have luck on their side as the alcohol torrent thankfully did not cause any injuries. It has only caused material damage as the red liquid flooded nearby roads, and land, and entered at least one basement, according to Portuguese newspaper Diário de Coimbra.
The said spillage has the residents worried and triggered a local environmental alert as the Anadia Fire Department has successfully managed to stop the wine from flowing and divert the flood away from the Certima River and a nearby field.
The Levira Distillery who owns the two tanks that have exploded has then issued a statement through a Facebook post last Sunday apologizing for the incident and the damage caused as a result. The winemaker said that the authorities are now investigating the incident that occurred to know its cause.
The distillery continued their statement saying, “We assume full responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage, having teams do so immediately. We are committed to resolving this situation as quickly as possible.”
The company is also covering damages on the soil that was soaked in wine due to the flood and will be taken to a special treatment plant for rehabilitation.
